Women’s Hoops kicks off new year

Jackson Gerber, Staff Writer

The Augsburg Women’s Basketball team has played four games since the beginning of 2018. The Auggies were .500 in those games, winning two in a row against Hamline and St. Olaf to extend their winning streak to four before losing two straight against Bethel and St. Benedict. Here are a few highlights from the first games of the new year:
Augsburg 72, Hamline 62
Sophomores Ariana Jones and K’Aezha Wubben scored 19 and 18 points respectively to help the Auggies overcome a slow start to defeat Hamline on Jan. 3. Jones was 5-of-8 from three-point range to contribute to her career high 19 points.
Augsburg 71, St. Olaf 46
Augsburg had 23 steals while forcing a season-high 35 turnovers en route to a dominant defensive performance against St. Olaf. The Auggies turned those 35 turnovers into 51 points in the contest. The Auggies were led by sophomore Camryn Speese who recorded 15 points to go along with six steals. Fellow sophomore Tamira McLemore dished out seven assists to go along with 11 points and six steals.
Augsburg 64, Bethel 96
Bethel shot an unbelievable 63.5 percent from the floor while holding Augsburg to a respectable 39.4 percent. One interesting stat to take away from this game is that this is the first loss that Augsburg has suffered when shooting better than 37 percent.
Augsburg 45, St. Benedict 59
The Auggies scored only six points in the first quarter and dealt with foul trouble all game as they couldn’t seem to find a rhythm offensively. Wubben led with 13 points while Senior Carlee Kobow grabbed a team-high 4 rebounds.
