All Recovery Meetings Gives Safe Space for Students

Aliya McKinney, contributor

Are you going through a tough time? Looking for support from your peers but not sure how to reach out? In search of a safe place on campus to talk about your struggles? The StepUp All Recovery Meetings are the perfect space for you to express yourself in a non-judgemental, supportive environment with other students.

The All Recovery Meetings are open to all students in any step of recovery as well as those who are curious about the recovery process. If you are dealing with mental health struggles, addiction, familial or relationship problems or any other stressors, these meetings may also be helpful to you.

The meetings start out with a moment of silence to recognize those that have passed, those that are still struggling and those in recovery. After the moment of silence, participants take turns reading different skills or components of the recovery process. Peers are then suggested to write down a topic they would like to share or discuss.

As an anxious introvert myself, I expected to attend the meeting as a quiet observer. However, once I noticed the friendly and supportive personalities of the group, I automatically felt accepted by them and was prompted to share some of my own troubles. When expressing myself and my difficulties, I was met with understanding and support from my peers as well as helpful advice. It felt incredibly relieving to share, especially knowing I was surrounded by others who would understand. Every student was met with this level of support when sharing in the group, something that is a great aspect of the All Recovery Meetings.

The meetings end with a recitation of a prayer that talks about change and can act as a reminder for those who are struggling: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and wisdom to know the difference.”

After the meeting, I had the chance to sit down with Alex Bassett, a student who also hosts the meetings. Bassett’s goal for the All Recovery Meetings is to create a place that is safe for everyone to express themselves, no matter the reason: “Everyone is welcome to attend, whether you are in recovery, curious about recovery or are just looking for support.”

All Recovery Meetings are held every Monday from 7-8 p.m. in Oren Gateway Center 103. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend, as the meetings are for all who are interested.
