For four years, offensive tackle and football team captain Andrew Hahn has been an anchor on the Auggie offensive line. Besides postseason honors, it’s nearly impossible for offensive linemen to gain recognition for their efforts and ability throughout the season. This is due to the fact that there are no dedicated in-game stats for offensive linemen. The only in-game stat that is listed on Hahn’s career sheet is a rush for negative one yard due to a fumble he recovered in a game against Macalester College in 2022. However, his leadership and postseason honors tell the story of how much he has contributed to the Auggie offense. Hahn was named to the 2023 division three region six All-Region team and the 2023 MIAC All-Conference team.
In an interview with the Echo, Hahn shed some light on the behind the scenes of the work it has taken to get to be one of the most highly touted offensive tackles in the MIAC. When asked about the personal meaning of being a captain of the Augsburg football team, Hahn revealed, “I wasn’t a captain of my high school football team. I didn’t put a lot of effort into being a leader. Coming to college, I wanted to focus more on becoming a better leader and becoming a better person. It’s kind of like a culmination of all of the hard work I’ve put into being a leader and also being a good football player.”

When asked about the work put into earning All-Conference and All-Region accolades, Hahn stated, “When I came in as a freshmen, I was really light and didn’t have a lot of knowledge of playing in a spread offense. About 25% of the work I put towards it was just getting physically better but I’ve always thought blocking is more mental than physical. I’ve learned through three seasons to position myself presnap to make them [defenders] go a certain way. But sometimes it’s about being physically better so putting effort into the weight room, doing all of the work in the offseason, eating right, gaining the right weight, maintaining the speed and the smarts. Some of it I would say is luck too. I’d say I was very lucky to play with a very high powered offense that made me look good. Also, playing with a scrambling quarterback got me out of some bad situations. It helps when the quarterback can make someone miss.”
He then said about his expectations on making All-Region and All-Conference this season, “I wouldn’t say that I expect it. Last year kind of came as a shock to me that I got postseason awards. I’m more looking forward to playing the last game with my teammates and enjoying it. All of the postseason stuff comes second to me. I really want to help the young guys build for the future and push Augsburg football in the right direction reaching towards the upper end of the MIAC.”
While Hahn won’t be returning next season due to graduation, keep an eye out for the Auggies next fall when they return to the field.
