Are Dems Doing Enough?

Klaus Solko, staff writer

So, let’s recap some of the horrible things our government has done these past few months. They’ve placed tariffs of 10% or over on around 90 nations and some islands that don’t even have people on them. Hope those penguins get to paying. They’ve cut federal DEI initiatives which gave permission to many businesses to do the same. They’ve started the return of education to the states which has already led to the Iowa senate to start trying to require their public schools to teach the Bible. Shall I continue?

And what have our supposed saving graces the Democrats done? Well, the Democratic Women Caucus (DWC) slayed in those pink suits of protest in March. And now we have had a 25-hour speech that wasn’t even done to block anything from passing.

Now for some global context, let me highlight how other countries treat their government being anti-democratic. In March, members of the Parliament of Serbia this year trashed parliament with smoke bombs, eggs and fire extinguishers. In Dec. 2024 when South Korea’s president tried to declare martial law in the middle of the night, lawmakers rushed to parliament to reduce damage and start to debate impeachment.

Back to America, I would like to say that Cory Booker’s filibuster did have some positive effects. The person whose record he broke was filibustering to stop the Civil Rights Act so that guy no longer being on the record books is nice. It was also a goal of Booker’s to find common ground between the Democrats and majority holding Republicans, so there can be the possibility that some of the crazy things Trump wants to do gets blocked.

Which is all well and good, but don’t forget that most people in government positions already share common ground. Like Booker didn’t once, in his 25 hours, mention Mahmoud Khalil or for that matter any other international students who have been detained for being involved in pro-Palestinian protests. Makes sense that Booker wouldn’t mention that though because, like many of the people in our Senate, he is a Zionist and gets money from AIPAC. But this isn’t just about him, it is about all members of both parties.

The two party system keeps people fighting people. We shouldn’t be looking at politicians through the lens of parties but instead what they believe in. I don’t care what party someone belongs to if they are a racist, a homophobe or a rapist. Black and white party thinking only benefits the fascists who are already in power.

Maybe what this discussion about Democrats doing enough should instead be focused on is why are people waiting for them too. David Hume said it best, “Nothing appears more surprising… than the easiness with which the many are governed by the few; and the implicit submission, with which men resign their own sentiments and passions to those of their rulers.”
