Athlete Spotlight: Mitchel Munzing is the Perfect Balance of Student and Athlete
Devin Schelske, sports editor

Mitchel Munzing of the Augsburg men’s soccer team has been setting the world of division three soccer on fire as of late. He is currently on a six game streak of at least one goal scored. In two games this season, he’s scored three goals. On the season, the midfielder is sitting at 10 goals scored, pairing with six assists for a total of 26 points. Munzing currently leads the MIAC in goals scored and points. He is also third in the MIAC in assists. Nationally, Munzing is in third place for points scored, is tied for third in goals scored and tied for fifth in assists. Munzing is currently averaging a goal per game and 0.6 assists per game. If he continues at this pace, he will break the record for goals in a season by four and the record for points in a season by 10. For his amazing start to the 2024 campaign, Munzing has earned two consecutive MIAC Offensive Player of the Week awards.
Although his play has been through the roof, Munzing’s success was anticipated. Munzing earned 2023 MIAC All-Conference honors in just his second season with the Auggies. He’s also been awarded MIAC Offensive Player of the Week twice prior to this season.

On top of the fantastic individual statistics and honors, Munzing is contributing to a top notch Auggie squad that has a record of 8-1-1. The team is on a six game win streak and has scored four or more goals in four of those games. With the help of his precision striking and passing, the Auggies are averaging 3.4 goals scored per game and are undefeated against conference opponents. With Munzing’s help to keep the ball on the opponent’s side of the field, the Auggies are averaging just one goal allowed per game. Arguably the most satisfying win came against Hamline who went into the Sept. 17 game undefeated. The Auggies served Hamline their first loss of the season and Munzing contributed a goal with two assists.
The best story that will tell you how good Munzing is came from the Sept. 11 game against Crown College. Munzing was unable to play in the first half of the game due to a physics lab. As many STEM majors know, labs are unskippable for the most part because missing just one could compromise your grade. However, Munzing showed up in a big way in the second half and came away with a 3-goal hat trick. There couldn’t be a better definition of a student-athlete than Mitchel Munzing.
Catch Munzing in his next home game on Oct. 2, at Edor Nelson Field against St. John’s University. There’s a large possibility that he extends his goal streak.
