The season for Augsburg University’s women’s hockey team kicks off with an exhibition game against the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, a formidable opponent with whom they have a storied rivalry. The last match ended in a close defeat back in March, leaving a lingering motivation for the team to reclaim bragging rights this season. The Auggies are more determined than ever to shift the narrative this time around. With a renewed focus on attacking the ice with vigor and intensity, the team is set to redefine their competitive edge against this opponent.

Last year, the Augsburg women’s hockey team showcased a remarkable performance, skating their way to a historic season with a triple crown of achievements: Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Regular-Season Champions, MIAC Playoff Champions, and a commendable placing as co-third place in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III national tournament. Their success has attracted significant attention and expectations surrounding the team as they embark on the new season.

Elizabeth Bauer, who coached the team through last season’s successes, is adapting to her new role as head coach after taking over from the esteemed Michelle McAteer, who enjoyed a 14-season tenure with the Auggies. Under McAteer’s leadership, the team reached new heights, including three MIAC Playoff Runner-up finishes during her tenure, with 2020-2021 being notably impacted by the pandemic. Bauer, who previously played for the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s Bluegolds, served as an assistant coach under McAteer. Her familiarity with the program and passion for development are expected to cultivate fresh talent and strengthen team dynamics this season.

Augsburg’s women’s hockey program is notable not only for its competitive spirit but also for fostering a supportive and inclusive atmosphere that promotes the growth of players both on and off the ice. The team emphasizes the importance of teamwork, discipline, and academic excellence, with many players excelling in their studies while balancing a rigorous practice schedule.
