From Waste to Wonder: Campus Kitchen and ShareShop Bring Value to Recycled Goods

Students may have noticed a new poster around campus advertising a recycled art gallery and competition. Well, the ShareShop and Campus Kitchen teams have partnered together for an art competition. However, this isn’t just any art competition, it is all about using recycled materials to make art.

This competition started on Nov. 7 and will continue through Nov. 21. People who wish to participate can go to the ShareShop in Sverdrup 8B where there will be free supplies. All the art submitted to the competition must have at least one recycled material, as the whole point of this Gallery is to highlight sustainability and creativity.

The competition is open for any Augsburg student to submit to. The rules are fairly simple: at least one recycled material must be used, and this can be from what the ShareShop provides or from recycled materials one has on hand. The art can be of or about anything as long as it follows the Augsburg Code of Conduct and is appropriate. The artwork can be 2D or 3D. I personally would be really impressed if someone did 4D.

Once a piece is completed it should be dropped off at the ShareShop. The competition will be accepting submissions up until the last day. The submissions will be displayed in the ShareShop for the duration of the Gallery. Also between these dates all students, staff and facility are encouraged to vote for their favorite pieces of art.

The ShareShop, when not hosting super cool galleries, is a place for students to shop for free. One worker says he calls the shop “a free thrift store.” Students can donate anything from clothes to books to furniture. Students can also come and look around for anything they might want or need. This includes furniture that students can rent out for free if their dorm room is looking drab.

ShareShop is committed to helping the Augsburg community and providing resources to our students. When asked, the same worker said that in the past, about four years ago, the ShareShop was not doing well. It was messy and not well connected with the student body. The team that we currently have is committed to changing that through events like the art gallery and more that they are hoping to throw. So if you want to help support go to the ShareShop, sign in and look around. Show that this is a resource that should stay at Augsburg.

You should also go to the last day of the Gallery, Nov. 21, when ShareShop and Campus Kitchen will be hosting a banquet. The banquet will take place from 4-6pm in the ShareShop. At the banquet the winners of the competition will be announced and will receive prizes in the form of professional art supply kits. There will also be snacks for everyone who attends and the promise of a fun time.
