Augsburg Eagles Rebuild and Recruit While Looking Forward to the Fall Semester

The Augsburg Eagles, the university’s dance and cheer team, have undergone a series of rapid changes with the start of the spring 2026 semester, including a new president, a new board, and the absence of an advisor. The previous advisor stepped down early this semester, bringing the team’s practices and events to a sudden halt. This pause in activities was a significant disappointment for team members, who have also experienced a major overhaul to the board and its members this semester. A temporary advisor has recently been appointed until the Eagles can find a permanent one.
At the start of the academic year, the team was led by Jose Cerna Hernandez, who was replaced by William Hildebran. Hildebran discussed the team’s new direction as they prepare for the start of the fall 2026 semester. The team will be built around members who want to participate and are willing to put in the work. “We are here to help them progress. […] I plan on having a team where, even though you may not be the best at something, we can help you improve,” Hildebran said.
This is a change from the previous team, which was organized based on skill level. The adjustment aims to grow the team following a significant drop in membership this year and to foster an environment of inclusivity and positivity. “I want to have a space where everyone is welcome … a space where everyone can have fun,” Hildebran said. An important aspect of the new Augsburg Eagles team is that anyone is free to try out for the team, regardless of gender identity or skill level.
I want to have a space where everyone is welcome … a space where everyone can have fun.

In an effort to continue growing the team and engaging the Augsburg community, Hildebran hopes to collaborate with other organizations on campus, such as the Pan-Afrikan Student Union, the Augsburg Asian Student Association and the Augsburg Pep Band. Students should expect to see the team perform at football and soccer games beginning in the fall. Hildebran also has an event in mind that he describes as a dance battle between the cheerleaders and football players.
Hildebran spoke about how the team has positively impacted him during his first year in college. He said it helped him step out of his comfort zone and make connections as a generally shy person.
Tryouts are scheduled for March 23, 24 and 26 at 7 p.m. in the Marshall Room. Everyone is encouraged to try out, and participants do not need to have a routine prepared—one will be provided if needed.
