Men’s hockey rises in polls

The Men’s Hockey team continued its successful start to the season with a close 3-2 win over University of Wisconsin River Falls. It was the fourth consecutive win for the Auggies to start the season.

The Auggies had to rally to earn the win in this one, as they were down 2-1 entering the third period of the match. Cayden Cahill and Thomas Clayton each scored goals for UW-River Falls to give them their lead.

Junior Jake Larson, who transferred from St. Norbert, scored Augsburg’s first goal at the 9:36 mark of the first period, this was Larson’s first goal as an Auggie. The score was tied in at the 8:24 mark of the third period courtesy of a power play goal scored by sophomore Jason Krych.

Juniors Alex Rodriguez and Chandler Madry assisted on both of the first two Augsburg goals. The eventual game winning goal was scored by first year Gunnar Goodmanson and was assisted by junior Lukas Gillett. Goodmanson picked the perfect time for his first collegiate goal, as it gave Augsburg the lead with a minute left in regulation. Junior Goalie Nick Schmit had 16 saves in goal to remain unbeaten in his first four starts of this season.

Augsburg claimed a 35-18 advantage in shots on-goal, including a 27-12 advantage in the final two periods. Rodriguez had seven shots on-goal in the game, while junior Eric Brenk had five shots. In the first four games this season 13 different players have scored goals, and 16 different players have recorded a goal or an assist.

Augsburg will head into a series with Bethel over the weekend to open up MIAC play. They head into the matchup 4-0-0, they are ranked #4 in the latest USCHO.com Division III national poll, and #10 in the in the D3hockey.com national poll.
