Men’s Soccer score’s big MIAC points

Jackson Gerber, Staff Writer

The men’s soccer team had a huge week in MIAC play, defeating a tough team in Macalester and drawing against a playoff hopeful team in Carleton.

It wasn’t until late in the first overtime period when senior Manni Egbujor used his All-American sprinter speed to blow past a Mac defender and squeeze one past the goalie for the 1-0 win. Macalester statistically dominated this game, outshooting the Auggie’s 18-4 but couldn’t put one in the back of the net. Garret Kaelin had a stellar performance, stopping all seven shots on goal.

The boys then traveled to Northfield to take on a strong team in Carleton. Augsburg was once again outshot by their opponent, this time by a 27-6 margin. But a team defensive effort allowed the Auggies to pick up a solid MIAC point in the 0-0 tie. Kaelin once again had a strong performance, getting his third shutout of the season. He was awarded the MIAC Player of the Week for his two shutouts and poise under pressure in the net.

Augsburg’s nine goals are tied for the second fewest in the MIAC. They will look to continue that strong defensive performance against Concordia Moorhead on Saturday and St. Thomas on Tuesday.
