Women’s hockey extends winning streak to five games

The Augsburg women’s hockey team visited UW-Superior on Nov. 20 and won 2-0, giving them their fifth straight win. Goals from Mikayla Jones and Jeanette Bealke proved to be all the Auggies needed thanks to a shutout performance by McKenna Manalli.
Despite outshooting the Yellowjackets 9-2 in the first period, the Auggies were unable to capitalize. Jones, Emily Ach, Kalli Prekker and Bridget Wagner all took two shots. Both teams had power plays near the middle of the period, but neither were able to produce a goal.
The second period was the decisive one for the Auggies. Jones scored her second goal of the season 6:02 into the period, with Meghan Johnson recording her fourth assist of the campaign. Bealke then scored her first goal of the season at the 12:15 mark, giving the Auggies a two-goal lead. Emily Ach and Ellie Tabaka picked up the assists on the play. Augsburg outshot Superior in the period 15-6.
Manalli continued to play well in goal in the third period, keeping the Yellowjackets from scoring in the nearly four minutes of power plays that they had. They took seven shots, nearly doubling their total for the game. The Auggies also took seven shots, and they were able to hold on for a 2-0 win. Manalli finished the game with 15 saves while recording her first shutout of the season.
Wagner and Jones led the team with six shots each, helping Augsburg outshoot the Yellowjackets 31-15 in the game. The Auggies have outscored opposing teams 21-5 during their five-game win streak and have taken more shots than their opponents in every game so far this season.
Augsburg is currently tied with St. Thomas for first place in the MIAC standings with eight points, followed closely my Concordia-Moorhead with seven points. The Auggies and the Tommies meet this weekend in a very important conference matchup, playing at Ed Saugestad Rink on Nov. 30 and at St. Thomas on Dec. 1.
