The Men’s basketball team began MIAC play last week, picking up a dominant win over the Carleton Knights last Wednesday but falling to the Bethel Royals in a thrilling overtime game Saturday afternoon.
It was all Auggies in the matchup against Carleton as they led by as much as 41 and were well on their way to a 74-46 victory. They jumped out to a 18-2 lead before eventually heading into the breakup 47-18. They were outscored 28-27 in the second half, but that was prime substitution time where 16 Auggies saw playing time, and 13 of them got into the scoring column. Kevin McKiernan lead the team on the night, posting his first career double-double. He recorded a team high 18 points and was also the top rebounder, grabbing 14.
Augsburg looked to use that momentum in a rematch of the MIAC playoff championship game at Bethel the following Saturday. A back-and-forth affair that saw eight ties and 13 lead changes eventually resulted in a thrilling 90-84 overtime loss for the Auggies. Despite shooting 50 percent in regulation, Augsburg was outscored 10-4 and connected on only two of their eight shots in the overtime period. Finishing with his third double-double of the year, Booker Coplin led the team with a high of 32 points and 12 rebounds while also finishing with a career high eight assists. Matt Carik also finished with a double-double, recording 11 points and grabbing a career high 10 rebounds.
The Auggies will take on Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday at 3 p.m., followed by a matchup with Minnesota-Morris on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Both games will be played at Si Melby Hall.
