The Augsburg women’s hockey team scored an easy sweep of St. Olaf this past weekend, outscoring the winless Oles by a combined score of 11–1 in the two games they played.
On Friday night at home, the Auggies scored twice in each period on their way to a 6-1 victory. Lanie Lobdell kicked off the scoring with her first collegiate goal six minutes into the contest, and Emily Ach would score five minutes later to put the Auggies up 2–0.
The Oles cut the lead to 2–1 by scoring early in the second period, but Bailey Beane and Mikayla Jones scored later in the period to put Augsburg up by three. In the final period, Ach netted her second goal of the game and Kayla Murray scored her first goal of the season to secure the 6–1. The Oles only managed two shots in the third period and were outshot 38–15 in the game.
Augsburg traveled to Northfield on Saturday night and dominated St. Olaf again, this time winning 5–0.
Bridget Wagner opened the scoring seven minutes in to the first period, and Mackenzie Molnar added a power play goal five minutes later to give the Auggies a 2–0 lead. Augsburg outshot St. Olaf 15–2 in the period. Wagner scored again for the loan goal of the second period, giving the Auggies a three-goal lead. Jones and McKenna Ellena scored forty seconds apart near the end of the third period, and the Auggies completed the shutout and the weekend sweep.
Over the last six seasons, the Auggies have beat St. Olaf 11 out of 12 times, and the Oles haven’t won both games against Augsburg since the 2010–11 season.
The wins were important for the MIAC playoff standings as well. The top five teams make the playoffs, and the top three get a first-round bye. Augsburg is now in third, one point ahead of both Concordia and Gustavus. This weekend, they play two games against Saint Benedict, who is currently sixth in the standings, seven points behind the Auggies. Two more wins would put Augsburg in position to clinch a playoff spot.
