Women’s Wrestling Preseason Outlook

Dominick Ingram, sports editor

The Augsburg Women’s Wrestling team had a successful first season last year and it looks like this year could continue the trend of establishing a great name for the new program. Entering their second season, the Augsburg Women’s Wrestling team was ranked 8th in the National Wrestling Association’s preseason poll.

The future is bright for this team, especially since they have so many young returning members. This year’s roster does not have a senior, so everyone could return for next year as well. This is a recipe for good team chemistry.

Unlike other teams out there, this team is dynamic. The Auggies have several contributors in different weight classes that are ranked, have All-American honors or high place championship placements. The team also appears more veteran-filled as they seem quick to learn, shown by the success they had in their debut season last year.

Returning for the Auggies will be the no.1 ranked wrestler in the 109 weight class, Emily Shilson, who shined in her debut season. Shilson finished 14-0 last year and was awarded several All-American honors. Shilson will continue to make a name for herself this year and hopefully continue her historic winning streak.

Vayle-Rae Baker will be looking to build off of her freshman year, where she finished with an 18-6 record. Baker was ranked high in the preseason poll this year. There is no doubt that she has the ability to move up in those rankings as the season progresses. She will be a key player to watch next season.

The Auggies will continue to set an example for other schools around the country who are looking to add a women’s wrestling program within their athletics department.
