The Augsburg Women’s wrestling team competed in the National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championships’ Northwest Regional Qualifier in Stevens Point last Sunday. The Auggies continued their dominance, finishing second behind North Central with six regional titlists and 13 qualifications to the national tournament.

Even though the Auggies have a young team, they can compete with the best of them. Sophomores Emily Shilson, Kahlea Jolly, Hannah Michael, Faith Tuttle, Marlynne Deede, Madi Horn, Destynie Pacheco, Gabby Skidmore and Melissa Jacobs led the way with impressive contributions.

Shilson was ranked number one in her weight class and showed why with a 47 second pin and a 27 second technical fall to win her regional title. Deede scored two technical fall wins to become a regional champion. Skidmore was also able to become a regional champion, winning her first two matches by technical falls and scoring a 2-1 victory in the championship bout. Jacobs also took home a regional final, winning two matches by decision. Jolly and Tuttle all finished second in their classes and earned national tournament berths. Pacheco and Horn also earned national tournament berths for the Auggies.

The freshman came to play as well, with Kya Rybach claiming a regional title by pinning her opponent in the semifinal and willing by technical fall in championship. Another freshman, Autumn Flanigan impressed when she scored two technical fall victories to make it to the finals and then won the regional final by a score 10-2.

The Juniors for the Auggies played well, with Savannah Vold and Sierra Brown Ton both earning national tournament berths.

The Auggies took second as a team with a score of 146, falling just short of North Central’s 156. The 13 Auggies that made the NCWWC national Championship will compete on March 6 in Tiffin, Ohio.
