Kevin Sethre, staff writer

The Augsburg volleyball team lost to Saint Benedict in straight sets on March 31, marking their first loss of the season. While the Auggies didn’t win a set, it was a close match shown by the 10 lead changes and the score being tied 22 times. The final scores of each set were 25-23, 25-21 and 25-21, respectively.

Augsburg had 45 kills compared to the Bennies 40, as well as a higher hitting percentage with .317 for Augsburg, compared to Saint Benedict’s .273. However, the service made the difference in the match.  The Bennies recorded nine service aces while the Auggies didn’t have any, and Augsburg committed ten service errors while Saint Benedict only committed five.

Despite the loss, there were some Auggies who had very nice individual performances. Jade Boysen led the team with 14 kills and had a .500 hitting percentage. Mikayla Coops led the team with a hitting percentage of .563 and recorded nine kills. Corrina Evans also had nine kills and registered a .400 hitting percentage. Coops and Maddie Nierengarten led Augsburg with nine digs each.

So far this season, Kayla Gjerde leads the team with 24 kills, Boysen and Coops are close behind with 23 each, and Corrina Evans has 22. Lexie Lang has the most assists with 48, and Izzy Barr is right behind her with 46. Gjerde, Nierengarten and Coops have the most digs with 38, 32 and 29, respectively. Jade Fullerton leads the team with 10 blocks while Coops is unmatched with five service aces.

The loss dropped the Auggies to 2-1 on the season. They had won both of their previous matches, against Concordia-Moorhead and Saint Mary’s, in straight sets. Their match against St. Thomas that was scheduled for April 7 was rescheduled for April 16, so the Auggies will have a two-week break before they host Concordia-Moorhead who they have won five straight matches against. Their match against them is their next, on April 14 at 7 P.M. in Si Melby Hall.
