Review: “Arcane” Iconic Video Game Turned Hit Animated Series
Percy Bartelt, staff writer
“League of Legends” players were cautiously optimistic about how their favorite game would pan out on the big screen, and they were excited to say that the new hit show “Arcane” was everything they had hoped for and is incredible on its own. I’ve heard several of my friends report enjoying the series despite never having played “League of Legends;” they can still understand the relationships and the overall plot with ease. I will explain briefly about “Arcane,” but I will abstain from any heavy spoilers.
The first episode was released last month and was created by Christian Linke and Alex Yee, creative designers at the company that made “League of Legends,” Riot Games. “Arcane” stars two fairly well known actresses: Hailee Steinfeld, who plays Vi, and Ella Purnell, who plays Jinx. With these two talented actresses playing even cooler animated action stars, it’s clear to see why this series is a favorite of “League of Legends” players and non-players alike.
With two cities in a heated dispute, two League champions, sisters named Vi and Jinx, fight on opposite sides to protect their city. This fictional universe was created to serve as a prequel to the League of Legends universe, whilst also telling various stories of characters from the dueling cities, Piltover and Zaun. It also retells the many characters’ origin stories, as before established by League of Legends, but it wasn’t executed in a way that completely disrupted life-long fans’ visions about their favorite characters. Many credit this series with its top-notch voice acting, incredible animation, design, world building, as well as its ability to revitalize a story that had already been made, giving it a whole new origin.
As for my own review of the show, I absolutely adored the level of expertise with the animation. The movements are extremely fluid and detailed, and other subtle character designs give this show it’s own unique style. As for the story, I am personally not a “League of Legends” player, but I was still able to enjoy the relationships between characters I’m meeting for the first time! Tying in with the animation, there are subtle details and expressions with the character that give them an extra human-like feel to them, it also manages to add to the overall story; you can guess what a character’s thinking, what they’re deciding to do next, etc. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this series and can’t wait to see where the creators will take it!
This series set records high within Netflix, it being one of the highest grossing shows and best-rated in such a short amount of time of it being released. “Arcane” is accredited with a 9.3/10 from IMDb, as well as an incredible 100% from Rotten Tomatoes. Overall, this series received nearly five full stars from reviews left, once again, both by “League of Legends” players and non-players. Anyone can enjoy this animated sci-fi wonder!
