Both the Augsburg women’s and men’s wrestling teams demonstrated strong showings at their most recent bouts.

The women’s wrestling team took fifth place in the NWCA Women’s National Duals, which were held at the Kentucky International Convention Center in Louisville on Jan. 6 and 7.

The Auggies opened the tournament with a 27-18 win over UW-Stevens Point, fell to seventh-ranked Tiffin University (Ohio) by a score of 27-19, and wrapped up the first day of competition by defeating Limestone University (South Carolina) 32-6.

In the final match of pool play the following day, Augsburg was defeated 31-12 by #1 King University (Tennessee) and finished pool play with a 2-2 record. They qualified for the fifth-place match by defeating Adrian College (Iowa) 25-13, and they easily beat Lindenwood University (Missouri) 36-6 in the fifth-place match.

Emily Shilson, the top-ranked 109-pounder, once again led the Auggies with a 6-0 record including two pins during the competition, and freshmen Katie Lange and Nina Makem finished with 5-1 records in the 143-pound and 136-pound weight classes, respectively.

The women’s team’s next match is on Jan. 29, when they host University of Jamestown and Iowa Wesleyan University in a triangular meet at Si Melby Hall, and they will compete at the NCWWC Northwest Qualifier on Feb. 19 and 20.  They were tied for fifth with Colorado Mesa University in the most recent NWCA Women’s Wrestling Rankings.

The men’s team won the Cornell College Mike Duroe Invitational on Jan. 15, and seven Auggies won either individual or co-individual titles at the meet.

Solomon Nielsen won the 174-pound weight class thanks to a pin, two technical falls, and a 13-3 major decision in the finals, improving his season record to an incredible 21-1.  Sam Stuhl won the 141-pound weight class by going 4-0 and winning two matches in the less than a minute, and he is now 9-0 since transferring to Augsburg from North Dakota State at the beginning of the semester.  Tyler Kim won five matches in the 285-pound weight class to improve to 27-3 on the season.  Tanner Kroells won the 149-pound title by finishing with a 4-0 to improve his season total to 16-6.  Freshman Derek Steel won his first tournament title by going 4-0 in the 125-pound weight class, and he is now 16-3 on the season.  Nick Rogge and Adam Sylvester shared the 184-pound crown and improved their records to 17-2 and 14-4, respectively, in the process.

Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann, Austin Gabbert, and Brady Gross finished second in the 197-pound, 133-pound, and 141-pound weight classes, respectively, and six more Auggies finished third in their respective weight classes.

The men are in action next on Sunday, Jan. 23 at the Saint John’s University North Country Open in Collegeville, and the NCAA Division III Upper Midwest Regional will take place on Feb. 25 and 26.  They are currently ranked fourth in the NWCA’s most recent NCAA Division III rankings.
