Every Play Counts as Womens Hockey Season Closes

Alexa Martin, staff writer

Augsburg Womens Hockey has had its ups and downs this season but as the regular season starts to come to a close, every game has become crucial. The Auggie women are currently sitting sixth in the MIAC standings with a 10-8-2 record.

On Feb. 5, the Auggies faced Gustavus, who currently lead the MIAC standings at 16-2-2. The game went down to the wire. At the end of the first period, it was tied 0-0, but early in the second period, the Gusties showed their conference-topping skills and scored three goals to a 3-0 lead. This did not deter our Auggies, who responded by scoring four unanswered goals to tie the game back up. Then in the third period in the last few minutes, the Gusties scored a goal tying the game 4-4, launching us into overtime and a shootout, which the Gusties won 1-0.

The Auggies had several players make strong contributions for them, starting with the goaltenders Chloe Stockinger and Abby Bollig. Stockinger had 21 saves in two periods, and Bollig had 10 saves in one period and in overtime. The Auggies also had four players score a goal. Kensie Malone got the Auggies going with the first goal, and the second goal of the game came from Katie Flynn, who scored off an assist from Kiley Wahlin. Lillia Scheid tied it up for the Auggies in the second period with her goal, and then to take the lead, Alex Collins scored her first ever goal in an Auggie uniform.

The Auggies have only four games left this season with a series against St. Mary’s and a series with the College of St. Benedict left. These games will be critical, as teams are fighting for position for the MIAC playoffs. Both St. Mary’s and St. Benedict are above the Auggies in the MIAC standings at #4 and #5 respectively. It is safe to say that these next four games should be exciting with the teams that close in the standings.

With the game against Bethel canceled, the Auggies only have a few more games left before the MIAC Play-In Game on Feb. 23, so let’s keep cheering on the team for the remainder of their season. Good luck with the rest of your season Auggies and do us proud!
