Hot Starts for Baseball & Softball

The Augsburg baseball and softball teams have now started their 2022 seasons, with both teams having promising starts in their played four games so far. Auggie baseball has started out red hot, sweeping two doubleheaders against Northland and North Central at US Bank Stadium. The softball team has also had a strong start to 2022, winning three out of four games in doubleheaders against Crown and Edgewood at Edor Nelson Field.
Augsburg baseball went into 2022 looking to improve on last season’s win total of only eight games, and they are already halfway to that previous mark with their 4-0 start. The season started against Northland College at US Bank Stadium with the team basically pulling an all-nighter. The first game of the doubleheader began at around 10 p.m., and the second one got started after 12:30 a.m. Despite this, the Auggies had absolutely no trouble staying energized. Winning 12-6 in the first game and 15-7 in the second, they left US Bank Stadium in the early hours of the morning with a record of 2-0. They would extend their win streak to four on the following Monday afternoon against North Central with a pair of 9-0 wins. The offense has been absolutely on fire through these early games. Three different Auggies are currently top five in the MIAC in batting average, and Jack Baumgart has driven in nine runs to lead the team. The pitching and defense has been solid as well. Through four total games, the pitching staff has combined to only allow runs in three innings.
For Auggie softball, it has been a very similar story so far. The season started with a doubleheader sweep of Crown, with the Auggies outscoring the Storm 16-4. They took game one by a score of 11-2, due to six different Auggie players driving in runs and first year pitcher Brynn Hostettler throwing a no-hitter in her first ever college start. Game two also featured an impressive pitching performance, with sophomore Olivia O’Connor striking out 10 and allowing just two runs in a 5-2 victory. After a loss to Edgewood in the first game the next day, the Auggies won an extra innings thriller in game two by a score of 11-10 to earn a split of the doubleheader and end the weekend at 3-1.
Even though it’s early in the season, the performances by Augsburg’s baseball and softball teams through their first four games have been very encouraging. Last year, the baseball team only won eight games, and so far this season they already have four wins. The softball team had five wins in 2021, and they have three after one weekend of play in 2022. Both teams have also already scored double digit runs twice, which only happened once for baseball and never for softball last season. It might be too soon to judge how good these teams are going to be but it’s definitely exciting to see this many signs of improvement after only four games for each.
