Swimming & Diving Team Makes a Splash at Carthage

Athletes from the Augsburg swimming and diving team reached their best times competing on Dec. 2 and 3 at the Carthage College Invitational in Kenosha, Wisconsin. This was the sixth meet of the season, with athletes reaching their best times of the season. On the team, five swimmers and two divers competed at the sixth meet of their season, totaling 10 events and four relays. 

For individuals, sophomore freestyle swimmer Lexci Wuorenma placed 23rd with the best individual final time of 26.61 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle. Next on the team to finish was junior swimmer Kaitlynne Haag with a time of 26.99 seconds, earning her 29th place overall. First-year Auggie swimmer Lucy Pederson finished with a time of 30.39 seconds, and fellow first year Alina Fuhs followed right behind her with a time of 31.83 seconds. Rounding out the Augsburg finishers was junior Maya Merritt, who finished with a time of 37.78 seconds. 

The Carthage College Invitational was a weekend for season bests, as multiple members of the team achieved their best times of the season. Pederson competed in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle, achieving season bests in both with times of 2:33.45 and 1:08.42 respectively. Fuhs achieved season bests in the 100-yard breaststroke as well as the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing with times of 1:24.11 and 3:03.88. Merritt reached a season best in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 3:12.55. 

The relays consisted of a 400-yard medley relay with Merritt, Fuhs, Pederson and Haag finishing with a time of 5:13.24 and a 200-yard medley relay with Merritt, Wuorenma, Fuhs and Haag finishing at 2:18.94. As for freestyle relays, the 200-yard freestyle was competed in by Haag, Wourenma, Fuhs and Pederson with a time of 1:54.84, while in the 400-yard freestyle was swam by Haag, Fuhs, Merritt and Pederson, with a final time of 4:42.70. 

Augsburg was also represented in the diving events. The Auggie divers who competed in Kenosha were first-year Willow Hansen and senior Alyssa Maciewski. Maciewski recorded a score of 210.55 in the one-meter diving event. 

The next competition for the Augsburg swimming and diving team will take place on Saturday, Jan. 21, when they head to Saint Paul to face Concordia University-St. Paul in a dual meet.
