President Biden Under Federal Investigation

According to ABC News, on Jan. 9, 2023, it was officially confirmed that a “small number of documents with classified markings” were found in a locked closet in Penn Biden Center at the University of Pennsylvania. The following day President Joe Biden made the public claim that he was “surprised” to hear of any document and didn’t even know what was supposedly inside them. After this encounter, a few more classified documents were discovered at Biden’s current residence in Wilmington, Delaware, also dating back to his Vice Presidency.

CNBC reports the White House counsel’s official spokesman Ian Sams updated the press on the president’s response and action following the investigation, “It’s important to really understand the distinction here: President Biden is committed to doing the responsible thing and acting appropriately.” The same is being said by the president’s personal lawyer, Richard Sauber. From this, the White House is claiming that Biden is fully cooperating with every step of the investigation. According to AP News, when asked if more documents will appear in the news upon the unknown status of the investigation, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated, “You should assume that it’s been completed, yes.” This presumably means that the public should assume that the investigation is complete, and more official handling needs to be done before an official report or statement is made.

Many Republican officials, mainly new Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy, are speaking about the differences and similarities between President Biden’s investigation and former-President Trump’s investigation of the classified documents found at his Mar-a-Lago home. McCarthy spoke on the GOP’s perspective after Trump’s investigation stating “It’s not a fair process when you equalize this out, and that is what is wrong with the system,” adding that “You want the American public to trust the final answer. That’s why the House will oversee and look at these investigations as well.”

Others have also compared the two investigations, both in scale and cooperation. USA Today has explained and compared as new information is being released in Biden’s case; The main difference stated being the number of uncovered classified documents, with Trump’s investigation uncovering 300 and President Biden’s being around twenty. Additionally, many have compared each President’s openness with discovering these documents as Trump claimed that the documents found at Mar-a-Lago were “declassified” by his executive authority, while Biden has reportedly been cooperative in helping the Department of Justice (DOJ) with their investigation.

While further information on President Biden’s case has yet to be reported on, what we do know is how the DOJ is handling this case, what has happened thus far, what is being done with these documents, and how Biden is publicly meeting this investigation. More information has yet to be released as of now.
