From Pokémon to Beatboxing, the Creative Arts Showcase Highlights Students’ Artistic Endeavors

Last week on Thursday, Sept. 25, the student lounge transformed into an art gallery with the Creative Arts Showcase. This space, usually filled with backpacks, snacks, or people playing games, was filled with hard-working students wanting to showcase their artistic and creative skills instead. From a presentation about Pokémon for Mom, to beatboxing, the diversity between each display in this event truly showcased a love for the arts. Isabella Olson, the CA for the Anderson Creative Arts LLC and active artist, threw this event because she wanted to showcase the creative and amazing pieces her residents have created.
The student pictured won a full ride for his comedy short film, “The Chosen What.” The film featured him and his peers sitting in the living room when “A God” pays them a visit and eventually calls upon him to do… something? This remarkable and hilarious showcase of his creative vision was met by laughter as well as rounds of applause. Later, another student featured two videos they made; one was a stop-motion claymation video, and the second was a video essay made for the love of arcades. They featured local arcades and interviewed people from the local pinball arcade scene in Minneapolis, showcasing great writing and filming. Several students showcased both digital and drawn art, with one student’s work even being used on a mural off-campus here in Minneapolis. One student presented a slideshow about Pokémon, in an attempt to educate their mom about which cards to buy for them. It went into great detail on what kinds of cards there are, what kind of Pokemon exist and how to use the cards to play the game.
What do all of these displays have in common? Nothing, really —besides the fact that they represent a creativity and uniqueness in all of us. That is the beauty in art; expression doesn’t look the same for everyone. Yet, we can all come together and admire it, ponder it, or maybe even laugh at it.
Many people say that the creative arts die out once you go into college, but these students prove them wrong. Within this gathering of art majors and non-art majors alike, students found a community of creatives and enjoyed some beautiful scenes.
