The Augsburg University Men’s Soccer team defeated St. Mary’s University Friday night by a score of 1-0 with the lone goal coming from an Aidan Sim-Campos penalty kick early in the first half. Sim-Campos was fouled just inside the penalty box in the twelfth minute and punched the ensuing PK into the bottom left corner to give the Auggies the lead. The goal was Sim-Campos’s second converted penalty kick and third goal of the season which ties him for the team lead.
Stellar play in the net from both starting keepers kept the rest of the match close with both teams getting good chances on the offensive end. Thomas Molski and Clark Paige each had two saves as Augsburg outshot St. Mary’s 16-12. Lionel Vang had four shots in the contest; Sim-Campos was not far behind with three shots of his own.
The Auggies are now 6-3-0 overall and 2-1-0 in MIAC play. They did not get their sixth win last year until the second-to-last match of the regular season and have showed lots of improvement these first eight games. The Auggies host Gustavus at Edor Nelson Field on Saturday Sept. 30 after falling to St. John’s in overtime on Tuesday.
