The Augsburg wrestling team continued to live up to its incredible high bar of success with an impressive meet against stiff competition. With four meets on the weekend, two of them against top-12 opponents, the Auggie wrestling team emerged with a 3-1 record with wins over Cornell (IA), Elmhurst (ILL) and #12 Wisconsin Whitewater while falling to #8 ranked Loras (IA) in a tightly contested match.
Several of the top-ranked Auggies swept their weekend matches. Lucas Jeske, for example, showed why he is the #1 ranked wrestler in his weight class with four wins by improving his record to 9-0 on the year. Sam Bennyhoff, ranked fifth in the 133-pound weight class also won his four matches and included an impressive win over Hazen Rice of Whitewater, the #10 ranked wrestler in the class.
The Auggies’ lone loss on the weekend came against Loras in a 17-16 decision that came down to the final match. After leading for a majority of the match and entering the heavyweight match with a 16-13 lead, Quin Gilliam of Loras got the best of Ethan Hofacker of Augsburg and managed to claim the victory for Loras.
The Auggies wrestle at home this week against Minnesota State University and again on Saturday in St. Cloud before a hiatus for holiday break.
