Auggies look to three-peat

Joe Rydel, Sports Editor

The Augsburg University Hockey team yet again finds themselves in great position heading into the postseason. Sitting just one point behind MIAC leading St. Thomas, the Auggies need one more win to clinch a playoff spot, and they could potentially overtake the Tommies in the standings for the top seed.
Last weekend, the Auggies split a series with conference foe, St. John’s University. On Thursday night, Augsburg relied on a relentless offensive attack, scoring seven goals on 38 shots to top the Johnnies by a score of 7-4. Fourteen different Auggies could be found on the stat sheet that night with goals and assists coming from every position throughout the lineup. Goals came off the sticks of Alex Rodriguez, Jake Larson, Drew Anderson, Lukas Gillett and Gunnar Goodsman.
A frigid Friday night at The Ed was a completely different game as defense dominated the contest. The Auggies ultimately fell by a score of 2-1 despite putting 39 shots on goal.  Auggie senior Eli May tallied the lone goal, making it his third on the season from the blue line. The team also paid tribute to its ten seniors, playing in their final regular season home game.
Up next, Augsburg travels to take on the Cobbers of Concordia-Moorhead. The puck drops on Friday night at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m.
