Love is in the air and for this upcoming Valentine’s Day, and I want to give a couple of suggestions for films that you can watch on this day of love. If you are looking for a romantic film to watch for Wednesday, this list will be a great place to start.
1. “The Notebook”
This film is a classic for this kind of list. It is lead by two great performances by Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. The story can seem pretty by the books, but it does a wonderful job of feeling fresh. It’s the kind of film that is always shown around this time because it just a wonderful love story about two interesting characters.
2. “500 Days of Summer”
This is a pick that it is a little more beaten off the path. The film focuses on Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Tom, an aspiring architect, trying to understand what went wrong in his relationship with Summer, played by Zooey Deschanel. The film does a lot of interesting things with the common romantic comedy formula, and if you haven’t seen this film yet, it should definitely be on your watchlist.
3. “When Harry Met Sally”
I picked another classic for this spot. This film builds around the relationship between Harry and Sally. Their relationship evolves from acquaintances to friends to a couple. Meg Ryan, who stars as Sally, gets typecast as the romantic comedy lead because she is so great in so many other movies like this. She and Billy Crystal do fantastic work together in this movie. This film is hilarious, but it has just as much heart to go along with it.
4. “Say, Anything”
John Cusack is a dynamic screen presence in this film. He gives a great performance, and the chemistry between him and Ione Skye is amazing. They have such an amazing relationship, and this film has one of the most famous cinematic moments. Who hasn’t held a boom box over their head replicating that perfect moment?
5. “Love, Actually”
This movie is just great. There are nine intertwined stories all focused around love. The film has a large cast filled with great performances. What is great about this film is that there are so many stories in this film, so if you don’t like one, you are bound to like a different one. The film just has a lot to offer and some of my personal favorite stories revolve around Hugh Grant, Alan Rickman and Laura Linney. It is such a crowd pleaser.
Valentine’s Day is a holiday focused around love, and I think these are just five films that I would recommend. Each film is such a great representation of love, and I hope that everyone can find some time to watch one of these films.
