The Augsburg women’s hockey team hosted the College of St. Scholastica over the weekend at Ed Saugestad Rink, coming away with a Friday evening loss and a Saturday-night tie. While the Auggies were able to dominate much of the offensive play, the Saints were able to capitalize when needed, ultimately victorious for the weekend.
The Auggies took the ice with gusto on Friday night, scoring early in the first period on the power play. Bridget Wagner and Mackenzie Molnar were able to find Nikki Nightengale to take the lead 1-0. However, Scholastica responded with a goal midway through the second period and two late third-period goals to go ahead 3-1. Despite being outshot 33-13 by the Auggies, the Saints were able to hang on to the victory.
Saturday proved to be much of the same story as the Auggies again outshot the Saints badly. This time, the shots were 47-14 in favor of Augsburg, which put the weekend’s total at 80-27.
The Auggies were able to score twice on Saturday with Emily Ach and Hollywood Hermanson each finding the back of the net. Scoreless after the first period, the Saints and the Auggies traded goals in the closing periods which led to a tie score late in the third. The Auggies had a huge opportunity in overtime to capitalize on a five-on-three powerplay but were unable to net the deciding goal. In overtime, Augsburg once again dominated play by not allowing the Saints a single shot on net during the extra period.
Up next, the Auggies will host a scrimmage against St. Olaf on Sat., Nov. 3 at 1 p.m. before opening MIAC play against Bethel University the following weekend.
