Coming off of a 2017–2018 campaign that brought another MIAC Championship and National Tournament appearance, the Augsburg men’s hockey team dropped the puck on what is looking to be another exciting and successful year on the ice. The Auggies competed at the annual MIAC Showcase over the weekend at the Schwan’s Super Rink in Blaine and came away with two wins over St. Olaf and Hamline.
Friday night pitted the Auggies against St. Olaf who had no answer for a relentless attack. Augsburg was able to blank the Oles by a final score of 3-0, behind stellar play from Alex Rodriguez, who netted all three Auggie goals in the contest. Tallying assists on the night were Matt Nehls, Chandler Madry and Lucas Niezelski. Combining for the shutout were goaltenders Nick Schmidt and Daniil Gerasimov, totaling 21 saves throughout the contest.
On Saturday, the Auggies squared up against long-time rival Hamline. The Pipers jumped to a lead early in the game but eventually fell to a late explosion of Augsburg offense which was again led by Rodriguez. Rodriguez tallied three goals along with Eric Brenk and Austin Dollimer netting goals to lift the Auggies to a 5-3 victory.
The Auggies have already drawn national attention, receiving votes as the 10th-best team in the country according to USCHO. Up next, the Auggies look to continue their winning ways at Ed Saugestad Rink next weekend. Augsburg will host the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Fri. and the University of Wisconsin-River Falls on Sat. The puck will drop at 7 p.m. for both contests.
