Men’s Hockey Out to Another Hot Start

By Greg Miller

The No. 7-ranked Augsburg men’s hockey team took it to Hamline this weekend winning 5-1 on Friday and 5-2 on Saturday, sweeping the Pipers. These two victories move the Auggies to 4-0 on the season.

On Friday, the Auggies played the home half of their opening MIAC series. At 14:22 in the first period, Gunnar Goodmanson put the Auggies on top with a power-play goal. Just over two minutes later, Michael Redmon extended the Auggies’ lead when he scored his first collegiate goal to put Augsburg up 2-0. Early on in the second period, the Auggies found themselves on the power play and scored again when Fritz Belisle scored his first collegiate goal. Hamline cut into the lead with a second period goal, but Augsburg answered when Grant Reichenbacher scored early in the third. Goodmanson would then score his second of the night, this time shorthanded, giving the Auggies the 5-1 win.

On Saturday, the Auggies headed to St Paul and came out firing with Redmon scoring at the 3:46 mark of the first period. Hamline tied it up near the end of the period and kept it close throughout most the second until Austin Martinsen broke the tie when he scored, giving Augsburg a 2-1 lead. Hamline tied it up again later in the second, but the Auggies caught fire in the third. Matt Nehls started the barrage early in the third, then Martinsen scored his second of the night and team leading fourth of the season. Goalie Jack Robbel scored the Auggies’ third goal of the period to give the Auggies the 5-2 victory.

After their weekend sweep, the Auggies jumped to #4 USCHO National Poll and will take on UW-Stout and UW-Eau Claire at home on Thursday and Saturday.
