Baseball Gains Early-Season Momentum

Dominick Ingram, Staff Writer

The Augsburg University baseball team has jumped out of the gates with a 4-1 record, determined to make a name for themselves this season. The Auggies have played 6 games at U.S. Bank Stadium this season, winning 4 games there as well as earning one series sweep against Northland. With a sweep of the Lawrence Vikings, the Auggies will bring their momentum to Arizona for a 10-game spring break trip starting on Saturday.

Last Sunday was eventful for the Auggies, as they held a doubleheader against Lawrence University at U.S. Bank Stadium. The Auggies held the Vikings to one lone run for the weekend, which earned them the series sweep. The first game of the doubleheader ended with a score of 3-1 due to many contributions by several Auggies. Starting pitcher Daris Uditsky was in command all game. Udistky allowed just one unearned run in four innings and improved to 2-1 with the win. The Auggies also had several contributors on offense, with Walker Rogers leading the way with two hits. Four other Auggies recorded a hit as well.

The Auggies won the 2nd game in great fashion, with Auggie pitchers combining for a one-hit shutout of the Vikings. Starting pitcher Dylan Irving started the ballgame, registering two strikeouts and five walks in the first 1.2 innings. Reliever Austin Jerylo came into the game to combine for the one-hit shutout win. Jerylo didn’t give up a hit until the top of the seventh inning, recording six strikeouts with no walks. He retired 11 batters in a row between the third and sixth innings, and only allowed two baserunners in the game. Freshman Steven Salz collected his first collegiate base hit which was a run-scoring double scoring Michael Weiss in the second inning, and Salz later scored on an RBI groundout by Matt Krenz.

Augsburg will look to continue their hot start in Arizona during spring break as they play 10 games over the span of the week. The Auggies will look to exceed expectations and to surpass their preseason rankings.
