Men’s Basketball Dominates Crown in Season Opener

After having multiple games postponed due to COVID, the Augsburg men’s basketball team finally opened their season with a 30-point blowout win over Crown College on Feb. 9. It was the Auggie’s first game since Feb. 25, 2020, a total of 350 days.
The Auggies were in control from the start, scoring the game’s first eight points and coasting to a 25-point halftime lead thanks to great shooting, specifically from beyond the arc. While the hot shooting cooled off in the second half, the Auggies still won with ease and grew the lead to forty points with about ten minutes left in the game.
Matt Carik led the team in scoring with 18 points in a game where four Auggies got into double digits. Jack Sorenson and James Streeter added 13 points each, and Joe Palmer recorded a double-double with eleven points and ten rebounds. Augsburg played well defensively, limiting Crown to just 35% shooting from the field and forcing 15 turnovers. Sorenson led the way with five steals.
On February 11, the Auggies traveled to Arden Hills to open up conference play against Bethel. The first half was back and forth, with Augsburg jumping out ahead 9-0, the Royals fighting back to take a slim lead about halfway through, and the Auggies ending the half on a 28-11 run to take a 16-point lead into the locker room.
Augsburg got off to a good start in the second half and even got ahead by 21 with 12:45 left, but Bethel made a furious comeback and was able to force overtime, where they outscored the Auggies 13-7 and won 85-79.
The team continues their season on Sunday when they host the Hamline Pipers at 2 PM.
