Softball Gets Swept by St. Scholastica

The Augsburg softball team was swept by St. Scholastica in a doubleheader at Edor Nelson Field on March 27 to finish off their non-conference schedule.

Augsburg left fielder Katie Manecke set the tone early, leading the game off with a solid hit. Manecke scored when pitcher Sabriya Passmore laid down a sacrifice bunt as St. Scholastica’s first baseman made a throwing error to give the Auggies an early 1-0 lead. Passmore was able to strand runners in both of the first two innings, but the Saints broke through with four runs in the top of the third inning as they got three hits and capitalized on three Augsburg errors. They added another in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly. The Auggies got two runs back in the bottom of the fourth when Olivia Dynneson hit a home run over the right-field fence and drove in Olivia O’Connor. Mackenzie Evenson drove Manecke in with a single in the bottom of the fifth, but St. Scholastica held on in the end and won 5-4.

The second game was a low-scoring affair. It stayed scoreless until the Saints got a clutch two-out hit in the bottom of the fourth. They added a second run the following inning. O’Connor pitched well, striking out four and only allowing two runs over six innings of work, but Augsburg failed to come up with hits in clutch situations and was held scoreless. Passmore had three hits and Dynneson had two, but the Auggies fell 2-0.

After starting the season at 3-9, the Auggies will look to bounce back as they will travel to St. Peter for a doubleheader with Gustavus on April 7, with the first game starting at 3:30. With the recent addition of fans being allowed to attend games, hopefully the Auggies can receive a boost of momentum to finish out the season.
