Women’s Lacrosse Work Towards Conference Goals

Greg Miller, staff writer

After starting the season with four non-conference losses, the Augsburg Lacrosse team opened up their Midwest Women’s Lacrosse Conference (MWLC) season with an 18 – 12 win against Monmouth College. The Auggies were hot out of the gate, scoring two goals in the first two minutes and starting a fantastic 18 minute opening that saw the Auggies jump out to a commanding 10 – 3 lead. The first half ended with a score of 13 – 6 and the Auggies held on in the second half to win 18 – 12.

Senior Allie Tuccitto opened for the Auggies scoring 12 seconds into the game. She added two more to her goal tally in the next nine minutes.  Seniors Meghan Furlong and Tehya Reinbold both scored five goals apiece. This sets the duo tied for second for MWLC goals this season. Senior Mikayla Knudson scored three goals and first-year Maylynn Prokpec made two. Senior Annika Hegrenes was also a key contributor of the night, having 14 draw controls, helping the Auggies take a 20 – 11 advantage in draw controls for the night.

With a strong start like this one, the Auggies are looking to win the MWLC this season, albeit with a smaller field of competition due to COVID-19. During the last full season, the Auggies finished fourth and the only team competing this year that finished higher is Hamline, who had completed a perfect season. This Auggie team has a lot of potential to accomplish big things this spring due to the amount of experience they have returning for this season with over half the team being either a Junior or Senior.

The next game for the Auggies is April 3 against Wartburg, where they will then have a small break to prepare for the Hamline on April 14.
