Augsburg Golfers Finish Summer Season with Winning Swings

The Augsburg men’s and women’s golf teams are at the end of their summer schedules. As a team, Womens Golf had a respectable season taking home the University of Wisconsin-Superior meet crown on Sept. 7 and placing eighth out of 10 in the MIAC Championships on Sept. 30. Mens Golf had a consistent season, ending most meets near the back of the pack. Their best finish was at the Augsburg University Invitational on Aug. 31 where they took seventh place out of 14 teams in attendance.

For the women, the top golfer was senior Avery Sawchuk who was able to become the fifth Augsburg Womens Golfer to earn MIAC All-Conference honors after tying for 10th place out of 48 golfers at the MIAC Championship meet. This was also Sawchuk’s first career All-Conference honor. Her score of 236 was good enough to beat her own school record for 54-holes. In two rounds of 18, Sawchuk recorded a pair of 76s which are tied for the fifth best scores in school history. Earlier in the season, Sawchuk added her first career individual title at the University of Wisconsin-Superior meet where she shot a 158 through 36 holes, the fourth best 36-hole performance in school history and two strokes behind her personal best of 156. Her score of 75 through the first 18 holes tied for the third best 18-hole performance in school history.

For the men, the top golfers have been Stellan Orvick and River Goodmanson who have each paced the team in two meets. Orvick led the way at the Augsburg University Invitational where he took sixth place out of 84 golfers with a score of 150 through 36 holes and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Frank Wrigglesworth Invitational meet with a score of 157 through 36 holes. Goodmanson took charge in the Bethel University/Minnesota Invitational with a score of 229 through 54 holes and the Gustavus Adolphus College Twin Cities Classic meet with a score of 224 through 54 holes. Orvick has been honored as a MIAC All-Conference selection each year since the 2020 season whereas Goodmanson has only been honored once in 2020. Orvick has been named to the All-Central region team twice whereas Goodmanson has yet to be honored. However, Goodmanson boasts a MIAC Athlete of the Week honor while Orvick has yet to receive one. It will be interesting to see who the top golfer will be at the MIAC Championships. Both golfers will look to place top 10 individually in order to be honored as MIAC All-Conference selections.
