The Augsburg track and field teams qualified two runners to the NCAA D- III Indoor National meet on March 10 and 11. The two men to qualify were senior Undre Smith-Brewer and sophomore Emmanuel Egbujor; both qualified for the 60-meter dash.
The tandem finished their conference season by dominating the MIAC conference meet by placing first and second in the 60 meter. Smith-Brewer ran 6.82 seconds and followed Egbujor with 6.95 seconds in finals. This made Smith- Brewer the four-time MIAC champion in the event. Going into the national meet both had run top ten times in the 60 meter. After prelims, Smith-Brewer went into finals seeded fifth after running a 6.85.
Unfortunately, Egbujor would not replicate his third-place finish from the 2016 national meet. A hamstring injury contributed to Egbujor missing finals by four sports. He ran 6.98 in his preliminary heat. Smith-Brewer could not muster the same effort in finals where he ran a 6.92. However, the performance landed him in sixth place and earned him the All-American title.
Smith-Brewer and Egbujor look to continue their MIAC dominance and make a splash nationally during this outdoor season. Both men’s and women’s teams compete this Saturday at Hamline University.
